Encouraging your teen’s growth and lifelong health

As children grow into their teens and approach adulthood, it can be hard to know how to best support them. From social pressures to physical developments, your child’s adolescent years are full of changes and stresses. Fortunately, we're here to help both you and your child navigate them for a healthier life now and for decades to come.

Helping your teenager manage their health

During healthcare visits, your child’s provider will cover many topics. Some of the things your child’s provider will talk to them about include alcohol, drugs, tobacco, sexual activity, pregnancy and pregnancy prevention, and an HPV and chlamydia screening.

Note that it’s normal to be asked to leave the room. As a parent or guardian, you will have a chance to tell the provider any concerns or ask questions. Then the provider will have the opportunity to ask your teenager some confidential questions. Legally, this conversation is private unless your teenager wishes to share with you. Teenagers are always encouraged to share with their parents but do not always choose to do so.

Even if you’re not in the room anymore for your child’s appointments, you can still keep an open line of communication with them about any and all healthcare topics.
